The Varsity Points System provides
a set of expectations that every varsity Trojans football
player is expected to meet. The system awards players points
in three categories: Commitment, Responsibility, and
Performance. The system enables players who fulfill the Commitment
and Responsibility categories to earn a varsity letter, regardless of
playing time. In this way, players of varying ability levels have
the same opportunity to earn a varsity letter in football.
Players who earn enough points by the
beginning of each football season are awarded a black practice
jersey. While this jersey does not guarantee playing time, it does
guarantee a spot on the varsity team for any player earning one. It
also helps the varsity coaches make position and depth chart decisions, as
those players who earned a black jersey proved themselves to be dependable
and dedicated to the team.
