Grading Policy/Classroom Procedures
| Your grade = (Number or points earned)
÷ (Number of points
possible) Daily Grades Daily grades are worth 5 points. I will check each assignment at the beginning of class. Full credit will be granted to those students who have the entire assignment completed at the beginning of class. The points will be decreased based on the amount of the assignment completed, down to 0 for having nothing done. Late Work A student may turn in late homework with a maximum of a 50% deduction, if it is turned in at the beginning of the next class period. After that, the assignment may receive a grade of a zero. Absent Policy Students shall be granted one (1) calendar day for each day of absence to make up work under a traditional schedule (ie. A student who misses Tuesday would have to turn in missed assignments on Thursday.) Under the block schedule, students shall have one like letter day for each day absence to make up work (ie. A student who misses and A-day on Wednesday shall not be required to turn in missed assignments on the next A-day, Friday. Rather, the student would be expected to turn in the assignment the following week on Tuesday (A-day).) "Pre-assigned" projects, papers and work are due the day that the student returns to school, regular homework and daily work are not considered pre-assigned. Assignment are available by calling the high school office with a request or online HERE!Quizzes On average, quiz questions are worth 2 points each. Most quizzes are worth between 20 and 50 points, not to exceed 50 points. Students are not allowed to retake quizzes. Tests Tests are worth 100 points. Each test question is worth about 3 points. On average, there will be between 30-40 questions on each test. Student will be given the full 90 minute period to complete the test. No extra time will be granted. Test Retake Policy Students are allowed and encouraged to retake any poor or failing test. The highest grade a student can receive on a test retake is a 90% for the first retake, an 80% for the second time retaking the same test, 70% for the third time and so on... Test retakes must be completed before the end of the grading period in which the test was given. Students wishing to retake a test must arrange a time with the teacher, usually during a homeroom period or in academic detention, during which they will complete a similar test covering the same material as the original test. Test grading curve Many times, I will "curve" a test based on the performance of the class. For Algebra and Geometry, I will take the 3rd highest grade in all classes from the sections that I teach and make it the 100% grade. For instance: If there are 100 points possible on the test, and the 3rd highest grade in all classes is a 95, I will assign grades for each test by subtracting the points missed from 100, and then dividing by 95. Final Exams Final exams will not be worth more than 20% of the final grade in a class. Extra Credit In my gradebook, I have an “assignment” that is called Extra Credit and it is worth 0 points. Any points in the extra credit column just adds to a student's points earned total and not to the points possible total. Throughout the year, students will have several opportunities to put points in their Extra Credit column. The most common way is by returning signed grade slips that I hand out periodically throughout the year. Another way is to complete a late assignment and turn it in. I will usually give 3 points of extra credit for every turned in late assignment and make a notation in the gradebook that that particular assignment has been turned in. As the year progresses, the students will be informed of additional way for them to earn extra credit points.
