Junior English Syllabus

Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence â“ Abigail Adams 1780 (Wife of President John Adams).

Welcome to Junior English.  This year we will not leave learning to chance.  Throughout this year, you will be reading great American Literature, perfecting your writing skills, and preparing for the ACT and PSAE tests.  This is a full agenda.

Literature â“ Junior English is focused on American authors and what they have contributed to our society.   By the end of the year, you will be familiar with the writings of various artists such as Washington Irving, Henry David Thoreau, Edgar Allen Poe, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Langston Hughes and more.  While reading these great American authors, we will be studying many genres of literature, so that you are exposed to drama, short story, poetry, essays and novel texts.

Within this framework, everyone will also develop presentation and technology skills while preparing power point presentations, group oral projects and individual opportunities for oral interpretations.

Writing â“ Throughout this year you will be assigned several writing assignments.  You will perfect your 5-paragraph writing skills, as well as develop the skills necessary to produce a formal term paper.  You will also have the opportunity to develop summary and analysis skills in general writing assignments.

ACT/PSAE Preparation â“ Since this is the year you will be taking two of the most important tests for your future, I will spend time helping you prepare.  During the year, we will discuss test-taking techniques and I will provide opportunities for you to use these skills in practice sessions.  My goal is to have you walk into these tests confident because you have been exposed to the testing style and you have acquired the knowledge and skills you need to help you achieve your best score.

Grammar and Vocabulary â“ Frequently during the year, we will be doing grammar and vocabulary drills to help increase your active (speaking) and passive (reading) vocabulary and context grammar knowledge.  These skills develop better readers, better writers and better speakers.

General â“ Overall, junior English will provide many opportunities for learning.  Each student must take responsibility for his or her reading, daily homework, writing, and classroom participation.  Work is expected to be turned in at the beginning of each class.  Any work turned in later that day will receive a maximum of half credit.  If work is not turned in the day it is due, it will receive a zero.  I am available before and after school or by appointment to help any student.  Please come see me with any questions before they become problems.

In addition to the textbook, enriched English students will be reading at least one novel per grading period.  On an assigned completion date, you will come back to class with your novel and do an in class writing analysis of the novel.

Writing â“ Throughout this year you will be assigned several writing assignments.  You will perfect your 5-paragraph writing skills, as well as develop the skills necessary to produce a formal term paper.  You will also have the opportunity to develop summary and analysis skills in general writing assignments.

General â“ Overall, Junior Enriched English will provide many opportunities for learning.  Each student must take responsibility for his or her reading, daily homework, writing, and classroom participation.  Since this is a weighted grade and expectations are higher, late work will not be accepted and will result in a zero.  I am available before and after school or by appointment to help any student.  Please come see me with any questions before they become problems.
