Senior Enriched English
Class Syllabus

Welcome to your last year at EHS.  As seniors you will be concentrating on British Literature, Writing and Vocabulary Development, as well as, Oral Presentation Skills.

Writing“ This class is strongly writing focused.  Students will be required to complete many composition assignments throughout the year.  These assignments will be prompt driven and completed outside of class.  Other writing assignments dealing with literature analysis will also be assigned throughout the year.  I will spend class time setting up the requirements for all compositions, so it is important each student be in class to get the benefit of this instruction.

Students will be expected to complete a final copy of a resume.  Outside professionals, use to evaluating resumes for job employment, will review this resume.  Students will also participate in mock interviews to help them develop and evaluate their verbal and nonverbal skills.

One six to eight page term paper will be completed this year.  This term paper will be structured as a comparison/contrast format.  Students will follow all MLA formatting, which will be discussed in class with resources available in the classroom, school library, and on-line.  This paper is written outside of class, and you will receive a timeline that will include each expectation and deadline for completion.

Students will also produce a Senior Memory Book.  This book will be written throughout the year and finally compiled at the end of the year.  You will write several chapters to this book.  You will be given a title for each chapter to help direct your writing.  At the end of the year a final book of all your writing will be compiled.  This final writing project is a major portion of your last nine weeks grade.  You need to do the writing throughout the year and the final project to insure your passing senior English.

Any writing found to be plagiarized will result in a zero for that assignment which could lead to failure of the nine weeks and disciplinary action.  Make sure all writing is your original work.

Vocabulary “Vocabulary terms and meanings will be discussed within the context of the literature we study and additionally as needed to prepare a strong collegiate vocabulary.    Students will learn how to determine word meanings by looking at root word meanings, suffix and prefix usage and context usage.

Literature “Before beginning our survey of British literature, students will be given a literature vocabulary list.  It is essential to learn the terminology of British literature before we begin assessing and critically dissecting the texts.  We will be constantly referring to the terms on this list throughout the year.  It is important students master these terms.

Once we have mastered the language of literature, we will begin studying literature in the Anglo Saxon Period.  This course is a survey of many texts written throughout British history.  During the year, as we study ancient classical texts, it is important students be in class and actively participate.  The language can be archaic and difficult to understand.

Students will read and critically assess Shakespeare's Macbeth.  This is an in-depth study of the play in its entirety and will include periodic tests, quizzes, and a final culmination writing and visual project and exam.

Students will be required to read one Senior AP novel per nine weeks.  Students will turn in a 2-3 page analysis paper on each novel they read.  This paper will analyze how the author develops at least two to three literary elements.  A full grading rubric will be given out at the beginning of class.

Students will also be responsible for mastering a British Cannon list.  It is important to become familiar with the various authors and their work.  Our limited time does not allow us to study each valuable author and work of British literature.

We will journey through many types of genres of literature ending with poetry.  Each student will be responsible for a poetry presentation that includes the biography of his or her chosen poet presented in an oral presentation format with visual aid and handout.  This is also a major part of your last nine weeks grade and must be completed to insure passing senior English.

This is a weighted class and will demand a large amount of your time and effort throughout the year.  I have high expectations of the students who take this class.  This class is a small example of the speed and volume which material is covered in a college environment.  All assignments are expected to be turned in on time and complete.  Failure to do this will result in a zero.  You will be expected to come to class each day prepared and ready to learn.
