Short Story Syllabus

Welcome to this one semester Short Story elective.  During this course we will be reading, analyzing, writing and presenting short stories.

Vocabulary – Students will first become familiar with the literary vocabulary needed to analyze and discuss literature.  Vocabulary will also be discussed within the context of the stories we read.

Reading– This course will focus on the many aspects of the short story.  Students will begin by reading and analyzing short stories using literary elements.  Each student will be able to identify each literary aspect and how an author uses those literary elements to create and enhance a short story.

Writing – Students will be writing throughout this semester.  Each student will need a writer’s journal notebook.  This notebook should be a 70-count spiral notebook.  If you do not have one, you may purchase one from me.  This notebook is critical to your success in this class.  If you lose your journal, your ability to pass this class will be jeopardized.  DO NOT LOSE YOUR JOURNAL!!

Your journal will contain the following types of writing:

                        Vocabulary and Homework Assignments

Personal Reader Responses to the stories we read.

                         Initial Analysis Responses

Free Writes from Prompts Given in Class

Summary and Goals of Teacher Writing Conferences

Reflective Writing Entries – Reflections on your personal writing

                         Creative Short Stories

Oral Presentations – Once during the semester you will be assigned a group oral presentation.  As a group you will evaluate and present a critique of a short story.  Along with this group presentation, you will be individually responsible for a written analysis of your portion of the presentation and an analysis of how each group member performed.

Final Project – The culminating activity for this class will be an original short story written by you.  You need to be prepared to read your story out loud and possibly have it compiled in a small booklet of stories.
