AN ASSESSMENT FOR U.S. HISTORY

Makers of History

All high school students in their,junior   year will be expected to write a significant biography of an important "Maker of American history." This project will require careful research and thoughtful integration of materials and ideas on four critical themes:

1. The person’s life. The student will develop a narrative of the person's life experiences. This may require reading autobiographies or biographies if the maker of history.

2. The person’s works. The student will be expected to study original works of the historical figure. If it is a political leader, it might be famous speeches, debates, or important document. If the person is a famous artist, the student will study original works.

3. The person’s times. All outstanding figures of history develop their ideas and important works in a particular context. The student will be expected to study the times in which the maker of history lived. The forces of history might be political, economic, cultural, technological, or artistic.

4. The person’s consequences for subsequent generations. Students will be expected to understand the larger impact the maker of history had upon his or her own time as well as subsequent generations. What are the larger contributions of the maker of history for other times?

The special project will develop a set of criteria that require the use of research skills, writing, and oral presentation and defense. Many higher order reasoning capabilities are needed: analysis, synthesis, evaluation. Criteria will also include appropriate knowledge of American history.

Your written report will be at least three (3) typewritten pages with a bibliography. Your oral report will be at least three to five (3-5) minutes in length. Deadlines will be announced during the projects time frame.Visuals will also be a part of this project.Three visuals should be included in the project.
