English I
Grade 9--Two Semesters

English instruction at the freshman level includes grammar review with an emphasis on usage and application.  Writing will be stressed through reading responses, autobiographical narratives, persuasive writing, analysis, and writing a research paper.  Literature studies will center around various short stories, Romeo and Juliet, as well as The Odyssey.  In addition, students will explore personal reading interests through reading workshop.  Writing and reading improvement are primary goals of this class.

English II
Grade 10--Two Semesters

English II will provide sophomores with instruction in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The study of literature will include texts from multicultural authors throughout various periods in American, British, and world literature. Students will continue their study of short stories, memoirs, novels, dramas, and poetry through reading, analysis, and a combination of technical, personal, and creative writing assignments. Instruction in grammar and vocabulary development will be interposed in literature and writing units to provide immediate relevance and optimize application. Significant literature units of focus may include, but are not limited to: Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Wiesel’s Night, and Steinbeck’s The Pearl. In class, students will actively participate in group discussions, class readings, and instructional presentations by taking notes and answering questions. Instruction on public speaking will also be included and involve student presentations and speeches on contemporary events and topics.

English III
Grade 11--Two Semesters

English instruction at the junior level includes a review of the basic concepts of grammar with emphasis on the more complicated constructions, writing with emphasis on five paragraphs, persuasive and expository papers, and a short research paper. American literature is studied.

English III -- Enriched
Grade 11--Two Semesters

Enriched English instruction at the junior level includes a review basic grammar concepts, writing with emphasis on five paragraphs, persuasive and expository papers, and an in depth research paper. American literature from the Puritan era to modern day is covered.  In addition to standard instruction, Enriched English students will also be required to read additional novels outside of class.  This class is faster paced with an overall writing emphasis.

English IV
Grade 12--Two Semesters

English IV will provide seniors with instruction in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The course will focus on British literature and emphasize the major authors and works from the Anglo-Saxon to the modern period. Significant units of study will include, but are not limited to: Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, Milton’s Paradise Lost, and Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth. Composition in the course will consist of technical, personal, and creative writing assignments ranging from analytical research to reflective journals. In class, students will actively participate in group discussions, class readings, and instructional presentations by taking notes and answering questions. As preparation for collegiate and professional careers, students will participate in group presentations, present individual speeches, and produce professional documents.

English IV – Honors
Grade 12--Two Semesters

English IV Honors is a writing intensive class structured to provide college bound seniors with the skills needed for success at the college level.  This class will provides instruction in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The course focuses on British literature and emphasizes the major authors and works from the Anglo-Saxon to the modern period. Significant units of study will include, but are not limited to: Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, Milton’s Paradise Lost, and Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, as well as additional novels. Compositions in the course will consist of analytical, personal, and creative writing assignments.  This is a fast paced, lecture driven course.

Prerequisites: Eng III Enriched

Short Story
Grade 11 or 12--One Semester Elective

Students in this class will read and respond to classical short stories.  Emphasis is placed on writing response analysis essays, presentation of analytical ideas and eventual creative writing of personal short stories.  This is a writing intensive class that requires organization and an enthusiasm to learn how to analyze and write short stories.  Students are required to read each other’s work and share their own writing in class.
