Spanish | French

SPANISH I
Grades 9-12--Two Semesters

The student is familiarized with the phonetic system of the target language. Conversational, listening, reading and writing skills are developed. Emphasis is placed upon the grammatical and syntactical structures of the Spanish language.   The text utilized is Dicho y Hecho.  All vocabulary is linked to Mrs. Welch’s webpage for practice.

SPANISH II
Grades 10-12--Two Semesters

Spanish II expands and intensifies the first level work. The student continues to build his/her active vocabulary and increases his/her knowledge of grammatical and syntactical patterns. Cultural insights are expanded upon.  The novela, La Ciudad de los Dioses, is read. This book deals with the conquest of Mexico; hence, providing the opportunity for historical study. All vocabulary from the novela is linked to Mrs. Welch’s webpage for practice.  In addition, students create a "life book" as a review exercise of the past, present, and future indicative tense.  Listening comprehension skills are targeted with the 52 episode video series, Destinos.

ADVANCED SPANISH
Grades 11-12--Two Semesters

Advanced Spanish reinforces the grammatical and syntactical skills acquired in Spanish I and II and introduces advanced grammatical concepts. Instruction and responses are primarily in the target language. Emphasis is placed upon original composition. The short story is the main literary format studied. Students create authentic speaking samples weekly. This course is weighted and students are expected to do college level work.

ADVANCED SPANISH/WORLD HISTORY
Grades 11-12--Two Semesters

Students study World History from primitive man to modern civilization. Instruction, writings, and readings are in the target language. Two credits are given for this singular offering - 1 in social studies and 1 in foreign language.  This course is a weighted offering.

FRENCH I
Grades 9-12--Two Semesters

French I introduces students to foreign language study. The students will engage in communicative and written activities that relate to areas of personal interest such as family, friends, travel, and food. Listening and reading activities are also emphasized. The students are introduced to basic grammatical concepts.

FRENCH II
Grades 10-12--Two Semesters

French II is a review and continuation of French I with an emphasis on improving the students' ability to communicate in French. Several new verb tenses are presented along with useful vocabulary that will enable the students to participate in a variety of situational activities.

French III & IV
Grades 11-12--Two Semesters

French III & IV is a review and continuation of French I and II with a more in-depth emphasis of geography, history, and culture of the French-speaking world. Vocabulary will be at a much higher level to enable them to communicate better through oral and written communication. Students will read newspaper and magazine articles and excerpts from classic French literature. Some new verb tenses are presented that will enable the students to participate in a variety of situational activities. This is a weighted class, so classroom expectations will be much higher in this class.
