It's that time again Trojans! We recognized our 90%, 95%, and 100% attendance students with tickets for our drawing next month. Big shoutout to @fsbelmwood for sponsoring the Level Up your Attendance. Also, congrats to Aubrey Menold for winning the $50 gift card from our Career Fair.

We've learned that wiring PV cells in series affect voltage, but not amperage. Today in Physical Science, we test to see what happens when we wire in parallel.

The Industrial Arts students are building wall sections in their construction section. The cutting of their 2x4s went well and building out their walls and connecting them has gone just as well. Rough wiring coming next! #TheTrojanWay #Elmwood322 #TrojanForge

According to Boyle's Law, pressure and volume of gases have an inverse relationship. Today we listened to Chemistry For Your Life to learn about a real medical issue called HAFE (high altitude flatulus expulsion) that can happen when you fly. A similar phenomenon occurs when you drink soda and have to burp. Some very real science with a bit of a sophomoric twist.
Congratulations to our March Staff Member of the Month Emily Bonebrake. She was nominated by her peers for her dedication to our students and fun activities in her classroom like "drinking a Burger King meal shake, dissecting pigs, or a Mammal March Madness. As a first year High School Science Teacher, Ms. Bonebrake is a great addition to our Trojan Family. Keep up the great work Ms. Bonebrake #TrojanWay

By knowing the molecular mass of a sample, and Avogadro's number (6.02e23 "things" per mole), we can determine the number of atoms or molecules in the sample. Today, seniors determined the number of CaCO3 molecules used to write a quote and sign their name using sidewalk chalk. Fun and educational.

Here is one of our most recent signs we have done. This is for a local band called Twisted Whiskey. This sign was most definitely a challenge for our CAD team but they were able to pull it off. #TheTrojanWay #Elmwood322 #TrojanForge

"Well, here's one reason why we are learning to wire in series and in parallel. This Lull requires 24V for its starter. To get that, two 12V batteries are wired in series." Pretty cool day wiring PV cells in series and then seeing this.

Things were a little wild today for the Junior High...we welcomed The University of Illinois Wildlife Clinic's Animal Ambassadors! While all of the animals were amazing, it's safe to say Pesto the opossum stole the show!

Forensic entomology analyzes developmental stages of insect species and how they related to decomposing remains to estimate time since death. Today, we apply this to the "If Maggots and Murder" lab. (We are not using actual maggots.)

Different substances absorb heat in ways unique to them called the specific heat capacity, C. Heat heat is measured in calories or Joules, and is denoted as Q. The heat aborbed by water, with known C=1.0cal/(g*F), is the same as heat removed from a hot sample of metal. Since Qwater=Qmetal, we can idenfity the unknown metal by using the equation Q=m*C*deltaT. A calorimeter is used to accomplish this.
